What does heartburn feel like?
Imagine an uncomfortable burning sensation in your chest — that’s what one of the signs of heartburn feels like, and it’s not the only one. Take a look below and get to know the other possible symptoms associated with heartburn.
Indigestion vs. heartburn
Like heartburn is a symptom of acid reflux, heartburn can also occur when you have indigestion. Indigestion happens when you feel over-full, bloated, and even sick after a big meal. This can cause stomach acid to rise into your esophagus, leading you to feel heartburn.
Common signs of heartburn
- A burning pain in the chest that worsens when you bend over or lie down
- A bitter, sour, or acidic taste in the back of your throat
- A burning feeling in your chest just behind the breastbone that can travel up the neck and throat
Severe chest pain, however, could be an indication of something more serious and you should seek medical attention immediately.
Uncommon signs of heartburn
- Difficult or painful swallowing
- Pain that radiates to your neck and shoulders
- Persistent hiccups
If any of these symptoms occur, you should discuss them with your doctor right away.
When to see a doctor
Seek medical attention if:
- you get heartburn more than twice a week
- you have severe heartburn symptoms
- the symptoms continue even with the use of prescription or non-prescription heartburn medication
- you have trouble swallowing
If you think that you're having a heart attack seek medical attention right away.
